What to do in the heat?

Hot days and tropical nights place a strain on the human organism, especially when several such days and nights follow each other. Young children, the elderly and people with health problems are particularly at risk.

Behavioral tips

You can protect yourself from excessive heat exposure with simple tips on how to behave:

  • Postpone physical activities, such as shopping or sport, to the morning and evening hours.
  • If possible, stay in the shade or in cool rooms.
  • For a cool room temperature, it is best to ventilate in the morning or evening. As soon as the outside temperature exceeds the inside temperature, you should keep doors and windows closed.
  • Ideally, darken your home with external shading.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting and breathable clothing. Wear breathable headgear when outdoors and protect your skin from UV radiation with sun cream. You can also use a fan to ensure a slight movement of air.
  • Drink a glass of water every hour. You can also increase your fluid intake with chilled herbal teas or juices. You should avoid alcohol, coffee and other caffeinated or highly sweetened drinks in hot weather. Do not drink drinks that are too cold either.
  • Eat several small and light meals throughout the day, such as salad, fruit or vegetables.
  • You can cool down with cool foot baths or water sprays.
  • If you regularly take medication, consult your doctor in good time. Some medicines lose their effect when exposed to heat. You should therefore store your medication in a cool environment.

Use drinking water dispensers and refill offers

There are drinking water dispensers in several places in the city:

  • Markt (city district Bonn)
  • Bottlerplatz (city district Bonn)
  • Theaterplatz (city district Bad Godesberg)
  • Reuterpark (city district Bonn)

In addition, a pilot project was launched on Friday, May 31, 2024: Three different models of drinking fountains will be tested with a view to extending the best-received model to other locations in the city following the test phase. The three new drinking fountains are located on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz in the district of Beuel, at Budafok-Park in the district of Bonn and in the pedestrian zone at Am Schickshof in the district of Hardtberg.

There are also a number of stores and facilities that participate in the “Refill Germany” project. A refill sticker on the window or door shows you where you can have tap water refilled free of charge in the drinking vessel you have brought with you. You can find an overview on  this map (opens in a new tab).
