Good transport connections

The federal city of Bonn is located in the middle of the European Rhine region. The Brussels area or the Rhine-Main region can be easily reached within 1-2 hours by high-speed ICE and THALYS trains or by car. The city is also connected to three international airports - Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt/Main:

  • Direct connections to Cologne/Bonn (25 min.), Düsseldorf (60 min.) and Frankfurt/Main (85 min.) airports.
  • Direct connection to the European high-speed rail network via Bonn Central Station or the ICE train station Siegburg/Bonn (approx. 2.5 hours Brussels Midi, 1 hour Frankfurt/Hbf. from Bonn city center)
  • Direct connections to the A 3 and A 61 highways, additional highway connections in the Bonn city area A 555 and A 565

Expert opinion: Connection in Bonn good

The most recent location survey conducted by the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Chamber of Industry and Commerce in 2022 confirms Bonn's good connections in particular: Bonn companies are most satisfied with airport connections and accessibility (score 2.5) and road and freeway connections and accessibility (score 2.7). The accessibility, frequency and condition of public transport and DB are rated somewhat lower with a grade of 3.2.

Workplace Centre Bonn

In 2022, 4.9 million people in North Rhine-Westphalia commuted to work across the borders of their place of residence, as determined by IT.NRW, the state statistics office, based on the 2022 commuter calculation. With 142,501 commuters (previous year 138,465), Bonn ranks fourth among the NRW commuter cities that attract the most employees. This means that Bonn's companies cover most of their workforce requirements from the surrounding area and neighboring cities: 56.4 percent of all people employed in Bonn are commuters. This puts Bonn in 6th place among the 30 major cities in North Rhine-Westphalia in terms of the commuter rate; in the Rhine region, Düsseldorf, for example, achieves an even higher figure of 60.0 percent. On the other hand, the out-commuting rate - i.e. the proportion of out-commuters in relation to the working population at the place of residence - is comparatively low in Bonn at 35.9 percent and ranks 22nd among the major NRW cities. Most commuters to Bonn come from the surrounding Rhein-Sieg district, primarily from Sankt Augustin (7,112), Königswinter (6,726) and Bornheim (6,380). The largest commuter links with one city are with Cologne. Every day, 16,718 people commute from there to their workplace in Bonn, while 15,102 people from Bonn commute in the opposite direction to their workplace in Cologne.

Current challenges

Various construction measures such as highway construction sites and construction/renovation measures are currently being carried out on the Deutsche Bahn network. The completion of many measures is expected to significantly improve the quality of the transport system. For example, the implementation of electronic interlockings on the left bank of the Rhine should reduce the susceptibility to disruption and thus improve punctuality in local transport. In air traffic, the previous pandemic situation at Cologne/Bonn Airport had already stabilized by 2022, with the number of passengers reaching 8.8 million. This trend has continued and in 2023 the airport transported a total of 9.8 million passengers (+11.5% compared to the previous year).

Furthermore, various measures are being implemented to modernize, expand and convert the regional and municipal transport networks with the aim of ensuring that 75% of journeys in Bonn are made on foot, by bike or by bus and train by 2030. To this end, the federal city is pursuing several local transport projects in parallel, for example with the planning of the Westbahn, the new construction of the central bus station or the cable car to the Venusberg.

The City of Bonn's Office for Economic Development is actively involved in a number of mobility transition projects. Examples include:

  • Coordination of the cooperation between the “VORFAHRT VERNUNFT” initiative and the Federal City of Bonn. The Lord Mayor and the six leading regional business associations meet twice a year to discuss important transport and urban planning issues. This format was launched in October 2023.
  • Support for the establishment of business parking spaces. In summer 2024, the city of Bonn set up the first business parking spaces in Südstadt and Kessenich, which are reserved for trade, care and delivery traffic during the day. Bonn is one of the first municipalities in Germany to offer business parking spaces and is thus playing a pioneering role in promoting commercial traffic.
  • Support in promoting and publicizing the regional company mobility management program JOBWÄRTS. The aim is to significantly reduce traffic congestion in the greater Bonn area and encourage more people to travel to work by bicycle, pedelec or bus and train. Currently, 28 employers are participating in JOBWÄRTS, reaching over 60,000 employees.
  • Coordination of a 30-person delegation trip to the Dutch city of Utrecht in September 2024 together with the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Chamber of Industry and Commerce, where politicians, administrators and interest groups came together to discuss inner-city development and mobility.

There is a regular exchange with the business organizations, in particular the Rhine-Sieg district business development agency, the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Cologne Chamber of Crafts, the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg District Craftsmen's Association and the trade associations. The business development consultants are constantly talking to companies about their mobility needs and challenges.

In addition, the Bonn Economic Development Agency is active in various committees and working groups in order to incorporate information from business and companies into the city's actions, including:

  • “Bonnbewegt”: The bonnbewegt project is managed by the Euskirchen branch of Autobahn GmbH Rheinland. The bonnbewegt project exists to coordinate the work of parallel construction measures. Here, Autobahn GmbH works closely with the city of Bonn, the Rhein-Sieg district, the transport associations and many other partners.
  • “Mobility Dialogue Forum” event format
  • IHK discussion groups, for example “Trade/Tourism/Urban Development”
