Minimal decline in population figures in 2023

According to the updated census results from 2011, the official population for the city of Bonn at the end of 2023 is 335,789. Compared to the end of 2022, the population has therefore fallen slightly by 676 inhabitants, or -0.2%. Natural population movement, i.e. the balance of births and deaths, accounts for the largest share of this decline. It was consistently positive in Bonn from 1987 to 2021. A negative balance was recorded for the first time in 2022. In 2023, there is also a negative balance of -481 (3,351 deaths, 2,870 births). In the past, population growth was also based on a positive balance of people moving in and out: In 2023, however, a very slight loss of around minus 200 inhabitants* is reported here. Municipal data

Parallel to the collection of official figures by IT.NRW, the statistics office of the city of Bonn generates the “municipal” population figures on the basis of the population register. At the end of 2023, the statistics office counted a total of 338,224 Bonn residents with their sole or main place of residence in the city based on statistical analysis of the population register data. Compared to the previous year, the population has therefore fallen slightly by minus 172 people, which corresponds to a decrease of around -0.1%.

Population forecast: plus 8.8 percent by 2050

According to the latest population forecast by the State Statistical Office IT.NRW, which is based on the update of the 2011 census, Bonn will continue to grow significantly in the longer term. According to this, the population will increase from 330,579 to 359,562 between January 1, 2021 and January 1, 2050, which corresponds to an absolute growth of 28,983 people or +8.8% in percentage terms. This means that Bonn is predicted to have the strongest population growth of all cities and districts in NRW. However, the other cities on the Rhine also have an advantage here. Cologne (+5.0%) and Düsseldorf (+4.2%) are also expected to grow. By contrast, the population in NRW as a whole is expected to decline by 1.7% by 2050. According to the IT.NRW forecast, the Rhine-Sieg district surrounding Bonn will also lose population slightly. The number of inhabitants will fall by around 1.0% from 600,375 to 594,176.

Census 2022

A census took place again in Germany in 2022. This statistical survey is used to determine how many people live in Germany, how they live and how they work. With the 2022 census, Germany took part in an EU-wide round of censuses, which have been held every ten years since 2011. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the census was postponed from 2021 to 2022 and the data was published on 25.06.2024. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the census revealed that a total of 268 of 396 cities and municipalities have a lower population than previously assumed. This includes the city of Bonn, which according to the 2022 census had a population of 321,633 as of 15.05.2022. This is a significant difference to the 2011 update, which is currently still valid. However, the official determination of the “new” population figures has not yet taken place.
