Solidarity partnership with Kherson: City of Bonn launches Christmas campaign

Under the motto "Bonn helps Kherson - your Christmas donation will make a difference!" the City of Bonn is raising awareness of its solidarity partnership with the southern Ukrainian city over the Christmas season. The partnership was founded in February.

Currently and until December 17, 2023, large billboards and digital screens will be on display in Bonn to promote support for Bonn’s war-torn partner city. Citizens will also be made aware of the fundraising campaign on the passenger TV channel in Bonn's subway trains and via postcard displays.

In addition, the current episode of the podcast "Bonn hört hin" is dedicated to the project. Katrin Trushevskyy, Program Coordinator Ukraine at the aid organization Help, the donation partner of the City of Bonn, and Stefan Wagner, Head of the Department of International Affairs and Global Sustainability at the City of Bonn, talk about how everyone can help. The podcast (in German) can be listened to  here (opens in a new tab)

"The war in Ukraine has been raging for almost two years. With the onset of winter, the situation for the people there is even more disastrous than it already was. Our help is urgently needed! I therefore ask you from the bottom of my heart to support our solidarity partnership with Kherson with a donation, especially now during the Christmas season. There are many ways to do so: Perhaps the proceeds from an Advent bazaar or a concert will be dedicated to this cause. Some of the family or company gifts could also be replaced by a donation. Every euro counts! I would also like to thank all those who have contributed to the 100,000 euros raised to date. Every donation makes a difference for the people of Kherson," says Mayor Katja Dörner.

To support their own campaigns, citizens or companies can request postcards and posters in various sizes from the City of Bonn. If you are interested, please send an email to  chersonbonnde

Basic medical care to be restored in Kherson

The aim of the donation project is to restore basic medical care in Kherson. The approximately 100,000 euros in donations collected so far have been used to purchase medical equipment and medicines. The population was also supported with food and hygiene packages as well as drinking water following the destruction of the Kakhovka dam. Help also provided assistance with the evacuation of people affected by the flood disaster in Kherson.

The City of Bonn and the municipal waste disposal company Bonnorange delivered three vehicles to Kherson this summer: a crew transport vehicle from the Bonn fire department, a street cleaning vehicle and a waste collection vehicle. A flatbed truck and a tipper with crane are expected to be delivered to Kherson by the City of Bonn at the beginning of next year under a project of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

In cooperation with the Central Warehouse for Donations in Kind ZeSaBo, technical equipment and tools, office equipment, medical products and hygiene articles were collected and brought to Ukraine after the dam burst.
