In their appeal, Matsui Kazumi and Taue Tomihisa recall Russia's repeated threats to use nuclear weapons and renew their call for the abolition of such weapons. They personally delivered the appeal to the ambassadors of the G7 member states in Japan and also sent it to the UN member states and the UN Secretary-General.
Mayor Katja Dörner said: "Being a city of the United Nations, where people from almost every country in the world peacefully live together, we explicitly support this appeal. Together, we must do everything we can to prevent a nuclear weapon from ever being used again."

The City of Bonn has been a member of the Mayors for Peace network since 2009. The association, founded in 1982 by the then mayor of Hiroshima, is primarily committed to the abolition of nuclear weapons, but also takes up current issues to discuss ways for peaceful coexistence. Around 8,000 cities have joined the network worldwide, including more than 800 cities in Germany.
