Europe

„Joy, beautiful spark divine“ - Bonn's most famous son, Ludwig van Beethoven, composed the world-famous melody, which officially became the European anthem in 1985 as an expression of the united Europe and a symbol of the European values of freedom, peace and solidarity.

Given the city’s history, it is a matter of course that Bonn is actively committed to a united Europe under the motto "Europe in Bonn – Bonn in Europe".

Europe is the guarantor of our life in peace, freedom, security and prosperity. This is all the more true as Europe is currently facing enormous challenges. Cities and municipalities are in demand here because they are the link between Europe and its citizens. The greatest peace project of modern times is only possible with the active commitment of local authorities and their citizens. In Bonn, home to one of three representations of the European Commission in Germany, innumerable bodies are working for the political, legal, cultural and economic integration in Europe.

As an international city, the City of Bonn is of course also involved in numerous European city networks such as EUROCITIES and the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), which lend a common voice to the concerns and ideas of cities and municipalities on the future development of Europe.
