By bike around the city

Many people use bicycles in Bonn. Whether just for fun, on the way to work or for a shopping trip, the city's almost 300 kilometres of cycle paths make cycling a pleasant activity. We show you how to travel safely and quickly in Bonn and where you can cycle most beautifully.

The Bonn region offers practically perfect conditions for both leisurely and athletic cycling trips. You can cycle far away from busy traffic on both banks of the Rhine and enjoy the wonderful view of the river and the Siebengebirge mountains. There are some particularly easy, flat stretches running along the banks of the Rhine.

You can head off on flat rides towards the north-west, and the Siebengebirge offers mountain bike tours. Steep hills and beautiful valleys can be navigated south-west of Bonn in the Ahr Hills of the Eifel region.

Strengthening the cycling sector

The city council decided in 2019 that Bonn is to become climate-neutral by 2035. Motorized traffic accounts for a large share of CO2 emissions. That is why Bonn has already done a lot to promote cycling in city traffic. The city council's resolution on climate neutrality by 2035 and the citizens' petition "Radentscheid Bonn" have brought this issue even more into the focus of transport planning.

In the future, the traffic system must be redesigned so that cyclists have more space and can get to their destination safely and comfortably. The planners of the city of Bonn have already set a lot in motion, for example:

  • Bicycle lanes and structurally separated bicycle traffic facilities have been and are being installed.
  • More streets have been designated as bicycle lanes, where bicycles have priority. More will follow steadily.
  • So called "Umweltspuren" (environmental lanes) ensure that bicyclists can move forward more safely alongside vehicular traffic. Sometimes bicyclists share these lanes with buses.
  • More and more bicycle parking spaces are being created throughout the city.
  • Long-way bicycle routes for commuters are being improved so that more people cycle to work.
