The management of municipal real estate serves to provide land and to implement urban development goals and infrastructural measures.

These can consist of making current urban projects possible by acquiring the necessary land or making land available for future urban projects. In the case of current projects, the focus is on the implementation of infrastructure measures and the mobility transition. These may involve the exercise of pre-emption rights or the acquisition of additional land.

Furthermore, the focus is on the provision of building land to promote (largely subsidized) housing construction, economic and structural development and the promotion of sporting, cultural, social and other communal purposes. However, the department's ability to make a significant contribution to the development of commercial and residential sites is limited by the existing limited supply of land. Another current focus is the acquisition of buildings to house refugees and homeless people.

The Real Estate department coordinates important investor projects for urban development as well as the entire purchase and sale of land for public and private purposes, markets municipal building plots, manages the heritable building rights issued by the city and manages undeveloped land that is not assigned a specific public function. The department's tasks also include contract management for the city's commercial catering businesses, the allocation of managed areas and the leasing of areas for temporary use. Another focus of work is the maintenance of the geo-information system with regard to the allocation of land for accounting purposes.

The department consists of around 25 employees and aims to ensure the optimal management of municipal land and properties in accordance with political guidelines and to provide impetus for the implementation of urban development goals and infrastructural measures.
