Guide through city and countryside

The "Radwegenetz Nordrhein-Westfalen" is marked with red and white signs.

To help you find your desired route or discover new connections, selected routes are equipped with signposts. Throughout the state, the "Radverkehrsnetz Nordrhein-Westfalen" (North Rhine-Westphalia cycling network) connects all cities and towns with uniform signposting.

All routes in this cycling network are uniformly signposted – with red lettering on a white background. At the top is a significant, more distant destination that is maintained throughout the connection distance. Among them, the intervening places are mentioned as closer destinations.

E-bike charging stations

More and more people are using an e-bike to travel faster and cover longer distances. Those who travel longer distances on their e-bikes need charging facilities in between. There are more and more e-bike charging stations in front of restaurants, museums, city halls and other attractive tourist locations.

In 2022, the city of Bonn created so-called „Mobilstationen“ (mobile stations) where e-bikes can be charged. Air pumps are also available here.

Expansion of cycling routes

The city of Bonn has a an important goal: to reduce 1,430 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 1,420 kilograms of nitrogen dioxide (NOx) every year until 2025 by expanding the bike routes. An external expert office had determined these values in advance. This is an estimate of how many car trips could be eliminated for commuters thanks to expanded bike routes – by shifting these trips to the bicycle.

Three sections are in the planning stage and most of them have already been completed.

For this purpose, the city of Bonn provides bicycle racks in the city quarters and is constantly expanding the range of secure parking facilities in parking garages and in bicycle boxes.

As part of one project, the city administration, together with partners, has set up mobile stations with 21 bicycle boxes in the city area. They offer the possibility to park the bicycle theft-proof and dry in such a box.

By bike on public transport

In general, you can take a bicycle on local trains all day, every day of the week. The same applies to all city trains, streetcars and bus lines within the regional area (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg). However, the bicycle does not have a right of carriage; it can only be taken along if there is sufficient space in the vehicle. In case of doubt, this is decided by the driving personnel. Baby carriages and people in wheelchairs have priority at all times.

No matter where you want to go in Bonn or how far you want to travel in the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS), you need a ticket for bicycle transport for your bicycle in addition to your ticket.

E-bikes and pedelecs can also be taken on buses and trains. The transport guidelines also permit the transport of tandems on trains. Customers with a severely disabled pass can also take them on buses, light rail or subway trains.
