The basis for the work performed by the Liaison Office is provided by the 2014 strategy paper on the International Science Hub Bonn. The strategy sets out Bonn’s strengths as an international science hub, identifies its development potential and recommends action to foster the city’s ongoing success in this field.
The Liaison Office for International Academic Science has the following responsibilities and tasks:
- Promoting Bonn’s special science-related links with Bonn-based UN organisations and with other international organisations around the world.
- Fostering collaboration between scientific institutes and international institutions, cultural partners and the media.
- Establishing and nurturing networks involving the science-based, future-focused topics addressed in Bonn (among them sustainable development, climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)), as well as organising and hosting associated events.
- Maintaining contact with organisations such as the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Research Foundation (DGF) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH).
- Developing attractive and innovative event formats and format combinations in the synergy areas of science, global issues, culture and media.
- Matching partners from Bonn-based science institutions with federal authorities, international organisations and internationally active organisations.
- Establishing networks such as the Biodiversity Network Bonn – known as BION.
The Liaison Office works closely with the University of Bonn. In line with the provisions of a specially-designed cooperation agreement, these work with various partners on wide-ranging projects and activities:
- Flying the banner “A Changing World” (Die Welt im Wandel), global, future-focused issues are addressed in a programme of public lectures.
- Inviting renowned scientists from Germany and around the world to travel to Bonn to speak, give presentations, exchange views and ideas with representatives from international organisations, and develop joint projects.
- Hosting special-focus project weeks attended by upcoming international researchers and specialists.
- Establishing networks like the international Biodiversity Network Bonn – BION which boasts more than 60 members and was established with the aim of identifying and pursuing joint projects.
- Commissioning studies to promote new scientific concepts, such as the Innovation Campus Bonn.
The vast opportunities offered by Bonn in its capacity as an international science hub must be further promoted and systematised. The aim here is to use various online and offline formats to create new scientific and transdisciplinary networks, on both a regional and an international scale.
Given its unique make-up, the International Science Hub Bonn has the potential to become an internationally renowned place of thinking and learning – one where topics of great importance are tackled and promoted by researchers and specialists with vast experience and outstanding expertise.
