Mayor Dörner receives the Director of the UNDP German Office

On Thursday, October 31, 2024, Mayor Katja Dörner received the Director of the Germany Representation Office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Melanie Hauenstein, in her office in the City Hall.

Mayor Katja Dörner (r.) and Melanie Hauenstein, Director of the Germany Representation of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), met for talks.

Melanie Hauenstein has been the new Director of the UNDP Germany Representation Office in Bonn and Berlin since January 2024. The office was established to deepen the close partnership between UNDP and Germany and to further strengthen Germany's role as a key player in development cooperation and as a supporter of multilateralism. The main objective of UNDP Germany is to work with Germany to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through democratic governance, poverty reduction, conflict prevention and environmental and climate protection.

The office works closely with partners from politics, business, civil society and the media. One example of this close partnership is the recently launched “Hamburg Sustainability Conference”. This conference, co-founded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Otto Foundation, the City of Hamburg and UNDP, brings together decision-makers from all over the world in Germany to work on innovative solutions for sustainable development.

Mayor Katja Dörner: “The development program is one of the most important programs of the United Nations. The fact that UNDP is also represented in Bonn is an important signal for our city, which is home to numerous UN institutions as well as many internationally active aid and development organizations.”

UNDP is active in more than 170 countries and contributes to the eradication of poverty, crisis prevention, the reduction of inequalities and exclusion as well as peaceful and sustainable development on the ground. The program supports countries in the development and implementation of strategies as well as in the development and financing of urgently needed infrastructure, specialist personnel and expertise in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In this way, UNDP makes a concrete contribution to giving people around the world better prospects for the future.
