IRENA Innovation Week: Pioneering Renewable Solutions for a Sustainable Future

In June, international innovators and experts of the international energy transition will flock to Bonn for the UN’s Subsidiary Body Meetings – but not only that: Building on a series of international conferences since 2016, IRENA is convening in 2025 for the fifth time its Innovation Week.

This year’s focus of the international gathering is on “Renewables and Digitalisation for a Sustainable Energy Future” and scheduled from June 10th to June 13th.

The IRENA Innovation Week aims to bring together a wide range of leaders, experts, industry representatives, academia, youth and policymakers to discuss cutting-edge innovations which can accelerate the global energy transition and promote sustainable development, powered by renewables and digitalisation technologies.  At the same time, participants get the opportunity to experience innovations in the region: The first day is reserved for site visits to Thyssenkrupp Steel Making Facilities in Duisburg and a renewables-powered data centre at Kraftwerke Mainz Wiesbaden AG.

The 2025 edition will feature a comprehensive agenda addressing the most pressing challenges and opportunities in renewable energy in two core streams of discussion:

Innovation in Infrastructure for Tripling Renewables: Focusing on closing the infrastructure gaps, leveraging digitalisation, and securing supply chains to scale renewable energy deployment worldwide.

Renewable-Based Solutions for Sustainable Development: Showcasing innovations for resilient power systems, productive uses of energy and local value creation, energy communities and bioenergy’s role in sustainable economic growth aligned with country priorities.

The event will begin with site visits to local institutions leading in renewable energy innovations, followed by a series of high-level dialogues and sessions, covering a wide range of topics such as demand-side management, digitalization for the energy transition, and innovative business models. The event will also focus on creating local value chains, addressing political risks in fragile countries, and enabling next-generation trade in renewable energy value chains.

Participants will engage with technology success stories from different parts of the world, networking opportunities, and discussions on the role of artificial intelligence in energy resource management. Norela Constantinescu, Acting Director of IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre, emphasizes the significance of Innovation Week: "This event is crucial for bringing together a global community of innovators. It fosters collaboration and the exchange of ideas that are essential for driving the energy transition forward."

Happening back-to-back with the United Nations’ June Climate Meetings (SB 62), IRENA Innovation Week 2025 is an opportunity to collaborate and drive the innovations needed to meet global climate goals and ensure a sustainable future.
