“Draußen Aktiv": New and free sports courses in Bonn's districts

Together with the Techniker Krankenkasse health carrier and the Stadtsportbund Bonn (SSB), the city of Bonn is launching the “Draußen Aktiv” prevention project, which offers all citizens a free and low-threshold exercise program at several locations in the city.

Outdoor fitness at Rigalsche Wiese

Interested parties can take part in the sports courses from September 1, 2024. These will take place until November. In 2025, the courses will start as early as April. The courses will take place in Reuterpark, at the exercise bench at Johanniter Hospital and at the new inclusive outdoor fitness facilities at Rigal'sche Wiese in Bad Godesberg and in Dransdorf, which were built as part of the “Modern Sports Facilities” funding program.

The offer includes exercises for motor skills, strength, endurance and coordination to strengthen the various large muscle groups. The level of the courses is broadly based, so that everyone - regardless of fitness level - can take part. The project was initiated by the Health Department and the Sports and Pool Department of the City of Bonn, in cooperation with the Office for Social Affairs and Housing and the Office for Children, Young People and Families to promote physical activity. It is financed by the Techniker Krankenkasse.

“The aim of the project is to improve the health and well-being of Bonn's citizens and, above all, to increase their enjoyment of outdoor exercise. With the courses, we can show the various training options directly at our new outdoor fitness facilities so that interested parties can use them independently and at any time,” says Stefan Günther, Head of the Sports and Pool Office.

As the prevention offer for health promotion in municipalities is financed by the Techniker Krankenkasse, it is possible for the exercise offers to be provided free of charge for everyone. “This exercise project will not only promote the physical health of Bonn's residents, but also strengthen the sense of community in the city's society. We are delighted to be a partner in this project and would like to thank everyone involved from the city of Bonn and the city sports association for their commitment,” says Frank Wirtz, Health Promotion and Prevention Advisor in the Living Environments division at Techniker Krankenkasse.

Ute Pilger, first chairwoman of the Stadtsportbund Bonn, explains: “We are delighted to be able to contribute our expertise to the implementation of the offers on site and to be able to rely on a qualified and highly motivated team. After all, sport and exercise are among the most effective and safest methods of staying healthy and preventing illness. It is particularly important to us that the exercises on the equipment are carried out correctly in order to achieve the desired goals. Our exercise instructors are on hand with help and advice to ensure effective and healthy training.”
