"BONNi & BO" climate driving license: 2,500 new climate ambassadors for Bonn

In 2025, 2,500 third-graders from 42 elementary school in Bonn once again successfully took part in the "BONNi & BO" climate driving license. The Bonn Climate Ambassadors Foundation's environmental education project, which is unique in Germany, teaches children in a playful way how they can play an active role in climate protection.

After the presentation of the climate guide certificates, the pupils, lion "BONNI", polar bear "BO", Mayor of Bonn Dörner (1st row, 2nd from right) and representatives of the Bonn Climate Ambassadors Foundation and the school posed for a group photo.

In May, the pupils independently completed 38 tasks on topics such as electricity, recycling, transportation, heating, food and water. They were accompanied by the cartoon characters BONNi the lion and BO the polar bear, who taught them climate knowledge in an entertaining way. The children received a stamp in their climate savings book for each task they completed. After completing all the tasks, they were awarded the credit card-sized climate driving license and can now call themselves "Bonn Climate Ambassadors".

Mayor of Bonn Katja Dörner, who is also Chair of the Board of the Bonn Climate Ambassadors Foundation, presented the award to the third-graders from Münster School on Friday, June 27, 2025. She was accompanied by comic artist Özi and the foundation's board members Rainer Virnich and Jürgen Winterwerp. A special highlight were the running figures of BONNi and BO, with whom the children were able to have their photo taken.

Katja Dörner: "I am delighted that 2,500 primary school children took part again this year. Since the start of this great project, 25,000 children from Bonn have now become climate ambassadors. This is a great achievement that the Bonn Climate Ambassadors Foundation, together with the participating schools, can be very proud of. When children get involved in climate protection at such an early age, it gives me courage for our big Bonn goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2035."

The Münsterschule was also officially recognized as a "BONNi & BO Climate School" for its repeated commitment. This award is given to schools that have taken part in the climate driving license at least three times - more than 30 schools in Bonn already hold this title.

Sparkasse Köln-Bonn, which launched the Bonn Climate Ambassador Foundation in 2010 under the umbrella of the Bonn Community Foundation, and Stadtwerke Bonn support the project financially and enable the children to participate free of charge. To celebrate the day, Stadtwerke also donated an ice cream van for the children.
