Bonn’s Activities for International Women’s Day 2024

“Exchange, celebrate, inform”: The City of Bonn is celebrating the International Women’s Day 2024 with a wide range of activities, to enable exchange, promote offers and celebrate the day together – jointly with other Bonn-based actors committed to women´s rights and to more equity in our society and in our city.

March 8 is an important day to draw attention to what has already been achieved in the realization of gender equality - and what, unfortunately, has not yet been achieved!

We have not yet reached our goal on the road to equality. Women are more affected by conflicts - as the current crises show us. But without the potential and talents of women, there will be no social progress.

We want to use International Women's Day 2024 to exchange views on important topics, to find out about offers, but also to celebrate. This year, we are once again doing this together with many different actors who are working for women's rights and more justice in our society and in our city. Our aim is to make this valuable work visible.

Join us on March 8!

Background to International Women’s Day

On March 19, 1911, International Women's Day was held for the first time in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland.  Born out of the socialist and social democratic women's movement, until the outbreak of World War I, International Women's Day was thematically characterized by the demand for unrestricted women's suffrage and better working conditions for women.

In 1975, during the International Year of Women, a United Nations celebration of International Women's Day was held on March 8, and finally, in 1977, this date was recognized as International Women's Day. Starting in 1979, the German government then also addressed the question of how the legal equality of women and men could also be translated into actual equality in the Enquete Commission. Since then, the fight against unequal treatment of women and men has been at the forefront of International Women's Day.
