The colorful umbrellas in the street in the city center symbolize the 17 Goals and will turn Friedrichstrasse from September 18 to October 4, 2021 into the 17 Goals Zone, where a socially, economically and ecologically sustainable Bonn becomes the overarching theme. Posters on the street and in stores will provide information on the SDGs in general and the commitment in Bonn and Friedrichstrasse in particular. During the campaign period, numerous initiatives, companies and groups will present their efforts in support of the SDGs in Bonn at information stands on Friday afternoon (September 25 and October 1) and all day on Saturday (September 18 and 25). Stores will pick up the topic as well. Footprints on the ground will offer all those interested the opportunity to test their individual ecological footprint.
The 17 Goals Zone on Friedrichstraße is part of this year's Bonn SDG Days, which, under the motto "17 Days for the 17 Goals," will provide impetus and showcase local commitment with numerous events and offerings.
"The SDGs have become the linchpin of the international sustainability discussion. As Germany's United Nations City and a center for sustainable development, we in Bonn see their implementation as a particular responsibility. To this end, we have already set a number of things in motion, such as our municipal Sustainability Strategy or the decision to make our city climate-neutral by 2035," says Mayor Katja Dörner. She will open the Action Days on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at 11 a.m. in the "17 Goals Space" on Münsterplatz.
"17 Goals Space" on Münsterplatz
The 17 Goals Space is a disused overseas container that has been converted by Engagement Global into an information and event space and is being used for the first time on Bonn's Münsterplatz. Up to and including September 26, it will offer information and hands-on activities and games as well as a related program. On September 18, 2021, for instance, it includes the "All Around Sustainable and Transformative" cultural program with talks and videos by the Local Agenda Office of the City of Bonn in cooperation with Fair Trade Town and Organic City of Bonn. In the morning, workshops for students on the topic of "Innovations from Africa" will be offered at the 17 Goals Space in cooperation with "Gemeinsam für Afrika“ (Together for Africa) and Engagement Global. During the day, there will be offerings from the Bonn Disabled Community, Südwind Institute, International Women's Center and others, and on five evenings, Bonn initiatives will present films on local or global topics in the new Bonner Glocale series, including two films with English subtitles that also address the city's international community.
Furthermore, there will be numerous decentralized and digital events as part of the SDG Days: The Volunteer Agency will present the daily SDG-related commitment of Bonn residents in a window of Beuel City Hall with the Volunteer Gallery, which will change every day throughout the campaign period. Greenpeace Bonn, FEMNET association and “Zentrallager Sachspenden Bonn” (ZeSaBo) are organizing a clothing exchange party with sewing workshop and a lecture on the clothing industry. The Bonn action group of UN Women is offering two feminist geocaching tours through Bonn. The student group Fairtrade University Bonn invites to a fair goal wall shooting on the Hofgartenwiese and the association Abenteuer Lernen is organizing a digital SDG pub quiz both, in German and Arabic.
