Another UN facility for Bonn

The United Nations has awarded Germany the contract to establish the planned Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence (GGCE) on the UN Campus in the City of Bonn. It is scheduled to open in mid-2021 and will create 20 new jobs at the site in the medium term.

Mayor Ashok Sridharan thanked the Federal Government and the Government of North Rhine-Westphalia for their continued support in strengthening Bonn as Germany's United Nations City: "The establishment of the new UN Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence is a further building block in strengthening Bonn as a UN location. Next year we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the UN City of Bonn. I am therefore particularly pleased to welcome the 25th UN institution to Bonn in our special anniversary year".

Over the past two decades Bonn has successfully established itself as the German city of the United Nations and as a hub for international cooperation and sustainable development. More than 20 United Nations organizations with over a thousand staff are now based in Bonn, including the UN Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC) and the Secretariat of the Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). In addition to federal agencies and German development cooperation institutions, numerous scientific institutes, companies and about 150 international and internationally active non-governmental organizations are also based in Bonn.
