UNRISD is an autonomous research institute within the UN system that has been conducting interdisciplinary research and policy analysis on the social dimensions of contemporary development issues since 1963. The Institute works with a global network of researchers, civil society actors and policy makers in both industrialized and developing countries with the aim of placing social equity, inclusion and equal opportunities at the heart of development thinking, policy and practice. UNRISD is headquartered in Geneva.
Mayor Ashok Sridharan officially welcomed UNRISD staff to the city of Bonn: "As the youngest member of the UN family, I would like to welcome UNRISD to the banks of the Rhine. I am pleased to be able to build on the talks and meetings we had with UNRISD in Geneva last year, and I also thank the Federal Foreign Office for its support. I am sure that UNRISD with its profile, especially in the field of sustainability, climate and Agenda 2030, will find many opportunities for cooperation here, both within and outside the UN Campus.” In addition to a number of scientific institutions, such as the University of Bonn and other institutions associated under the Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research, Sridharan also mentioned the more than 150 national and international non-governmental organizations based in Bonn as possible partners for exchange and joint projects.
Ambassador Jutta Schmitz, Head of the Liaison Office of the Federal Foreign Office to the UN Campus Bonn, pointed out the synergies to be expected from the opportunities for cooperation with the UN organizations already based in Bonn: "With its experience and focus, UNRISD, as a valued new member of the UN family in Bonn, will enrich the work on the Campus, which will focus on three priority areas: firstly, sustainability, climate, environment, secondly, science and innovation, thirdly, human resources management and education/training".
UNRISD: Contribution to the implementation of the SDGs
UNRISD Director Paul Ladd said: "As we begin the Decade of Action on the SDGs, UNRISD is very pleased to join the UN Bonn sustainability hub and eager to collaborate with the organizations in the city working towards sustainable development. UNRISD’s focus on the social dimensions of sustainable development keeps people at the very center of research, policy and action for transformative change."
UNRISD analyses the economic, social, environmental and political dimensions of development. Thanks to its worldwide network, the UN organization brings underrepresented positions, primarily from countries of the global South, into international debates. UNRISD research and policy analyses make an important contribution to the implementation of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The scientists conduct research primarily in the three areas of social dimensions of sustainable development, social policy and gender.
The Bonn office will be headed by Isabell Kempf, who was previously co-director of the Nairobi-based Poverty-Environment Action for SDGs. She is looking forward to her time in Bonn and the new tasks and cooperation opportunities.
