As the German city of the United Nations and a center for international cooperation, Bonn has become a true hub for sustainable development – a place for the debate and for the solution of global future-oriented issues. The city is aware of its global responsibility and has actively committed to Agenda 2030 and to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
At the Department of International Affairs and Global Sustainability, we work to support and provide visibility to these valuable efforts that are undertaken in and from Bonn.
Who we are:
The Department of International Affairs and Global Sustainability is the municipal service unit for Bonn-based UN agencies and for a wide range of national and international (non-governmental) organizations and their staff.
What we do:
We support the expansion and further development of Bonn as Germany’s United Nations City and hub for sustainable development. This includes accompanying international conferences in Bonn and facilitating appropriate framework programmes, and promoting the work and topics of the UN in Bonn in general. Moreover, we render support to the settlement and work of international non-governmental organizations that are active in the fields of environment, climate and sustainable development.
We coordinate the City of Bonn’s involvement and exchange in European city networks as well as in municipal development cooperation, which includes maintaining a number of project partnerships with other cities around the globe.
We also foster the implementation of global sustainability strategies at local level as well as Bonn’s participation in international networks and cooperation with relevant stakeholders on site.
Focal points for our work
Rendering international services and conference support
We promote the work and topics of the UN in Bonn and provide a range of services to the entities and their staff. We organize official functions on behalf of the City of Bonn and compile suitable, event-related supporting programmes for conferences at the location.
We support the settlement and work of internationally active non-governmental organizations in the fields of environment, climate and sustainable development by providing advice on administrative and legal aspects of the relocation or establishment in Bonn, by supporting the search for suitable properties, assisting with formalities and official matters, by offering annual partnerships and providing services for employees on site.
The City of Bonn addresses the employees of international organizations at the location and offers numerous services in this area. Various thematic event formats - in particular the BonnExpat event series, which is organized in cooperation with the Foundation of International Dialogue of Sparkasse Bonn and Deutsche Post DHL - help expats to feel at home in Bonn and get to know each other and their new surroundings. A newsletter, comprehensive English-language information on the city's website, and personal on-site counseling complement our services.
The City of Bonn is committed to a united Europe - both through active participation in European city networks (including the Council of European Municipalities and Regions, EUROCITIES) and with a variety of local events that make Europe tangible for the people of Bonn (such as Europe Day and Europe Week). The Department of International Affairs and Global Sustainability coordinates the city's work on Europe, provides information on current developments at the European level and participates in the experience exchange with other European municipalities through its involvement in European city networks and projects.
Maintaining international cooperation
The City of Bonn maintains project partnerships and collaboration with cities around the world. The focus is on municipal exchange of experience and joint project work in thematic areas such as sustainable development, education and culture. The topic of sustainability shapes all areas of the city's international cooperation and, in particular, its active participation in city networks such as ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability, which is coordinated by the Department of International Affairs and Global Sustainability.
Promoting sustainability and development education
With Agenda 2030, the world community has set itself the goal of working together to overcome global problems such as climate change, species extinction, poverty, hunger, growing inequalities and armed conflicts. Bonn feels a particular responsibility to implement the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as formulated in the Agenda in Bonn. This includes both comprehensive educational offerings and a lively SDG campaign on the ground, as well as the step-by-step strategic transfer of the SDGs into municipal action. Bonn’s comprehensive Sustainability Strategy as well as the local SDG campaign are coordinated in a lead role by the Department of International Affairs and Global Sustainability.
Coordinating funding for international and sustainable projects
Bonn’s City Council provides funding to organizations for development education work and the strengthening of Bonn’s project partnerships as well as for the implementation of Agenda 2030. The Department of International Affairs and Global Sustainability coordinates related inquiries and applications for project funding so that the Committee for Europe, International Affairs, Science, Economics and Labor may decide on the allocation of funds.
