ICLEI World Congress 2021 meets digitally

Bonn Mayor Katja Dörner takes over portfolio on Climate Action and Low Emission Development on the Global Executive Committee of the international city network.

The World Congress of the international city network ICLEI will take place in Malmö, Sweden, from April 13 to 15, 2021, due to the global infection situation as a purely digital kick-off, to be followed by an on-site event in early summer 2022. More than 1,700 cities around the world belong to the cities network for sustainability; Bonn has been an active member since 1999 and is home to the ICLEI World Secretariat.

Mayor Katja Dörner, who was elected to the network’s 2021 to 2024 Global Executive Committee in March, will attend the World Congress and the inaugural board meeting to be held on Monday, April 12, 2021. She is co-chairing the portfolio on Climate Action and Low Emissions together with Tunc Soyer, Mayor of the Izmir Metropolitan Region in Turkey, and will present the work plan at the meeting. Her special focus will be on climate neutrality and integrated action for climate and sustainability.

Mayor Dörner's portfolio will also include, in particular, maintaining and developing relations with the United Nations in Bonn, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. She is already in contact with the Executive Secretary of the Climate Secretariat, Patricia Espinosa, to this end. Another concern for Katja Dörner is the Daring Cities conference series, which this year will once again bring together cities and regions from Bonn for ambitious action on climate protection.

As part of the virtual congress program, Katja Dörner will speak on Thursday, April 15, 2021, 4 pm. Register at   https://worldcongress.iclei.org/ (opens in a new tab), to follow this event online. Mayor Dörner will join newly elected ICLEI President Mayor Frank Cownie of Des Moines, Iowa, USA, in a moderated dialogue on climate protection and low emissions, following a keynote address by Japanese Environment Minister Shinjirō Koizumi.

Numerous mayors and representatives of international organizations will speak during the roundtable. The debate will also continue at the Daring Cities conference in Bonn in October, leading to an on-site conference in Malmö in 2022. Katrin Stjernfeld-Jammeh, Mayor of Malmö, has been elected First Vice President of ICLEI.
