Urban October 2020: Cities Matter

Urbanization has become one of the most important dynamics of our time: Already today, more than half of the world's population lives in cities. In addition, over 90 percent of global population growth by 2050 will take place in cities, so it is clear that the future is urban!

In this light, the United Nations have launched the "Urban October" - an event month in which UN-Habitat partner organizations are encouraged to organize activities, events and discussions on the topic of urban sustainability.

Urbanization is also a central theme for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), because almost all future issues are decided in cities. For this reason, the urban projects of GIZ have launched their own Urban October program for the third year in a row.

You can expect a colorful program around the topic of cities, whereby the changed conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic have been seen as a motivation to develop innovative event concepts: The opening of the Urban October 2020 of the GIZ is on October 2, 2020 at 10:30 by the head of department Joachim Göske in the context of the vernissage of a virtual photo e-Xhibition with contributions from GIZ, KfW and BMZ.

More than 50 percent of the GIZ Urban October programme are open for the public, including many exciting (virtual) discussions and seminars, but also a physical city tour organized by the City of Bonn.

As part of the Urban October events series, the City of Bonn also co-organizes a discussion entitled “Green Cities: Bonn’s path towards climate neutrality” (in German) on 30 October.
