The Economic Development Office offers a wide range of services related to the topic of science through its Science Unit. Depending on the target group, various measures are implemented to strengthen and utilize the potential of universities and research institutions in a tailored manner.
Under the umbrella of the "Bonn Science Region", the business development agencies of the city of Bonn, the Rhein-Sieg district and the Ahrweiler district have been cooperating with science and research institutions and their offices for transfer, public relations and career services for over 25 years.
Offer a platform
Many of the services and networking opportunities offered by the Office of Science thrive on direct exchange and personal contacts. These include events and the annual trade show appearance with the joint booth at the Hannover Messe. Due to the effects of the Corona pandemic, some of the business development offers were and are currently only possible digitally. Participation in the purely digital Hannover Messe 2021 was not undertaken after consultation with potential co-exhibitors from science and research. Participation for 2022 is being planned. At the trade fair stand, institutes and startups from the universities, innovative companies and research facilities will have the opportunity to present services and initiate collaborations.
One of the goals of the Economic Development Office's graduate retention activities is to make students aware of the wide range of job opportunities in the region. Employers are also advised on recruiting young academics. The "Next Stop: Job" series provides students, graduates, and doctoral candidates with information about career entry opportunities in the region directly from local employers. In the summer semester 2020 and winter semester 2020/21, eight employers were visited virtually, and around three hundred students took advantage of the digital offering.
Due to the pandemic, the one-year GeoMentoring program was extended for another year. This allowed the total of sixteen tandems to adapt to the changed situation and conduct their workshops, meetings, networking appointments, etc. online. The aim of GeoMentoring is to support master's students of geography and geodesy in their professional orientation and to provide insights into everyday professional life and regional networks. The program was initiated by the Geoinitiative and is operationally implemented by the Economic Development Office in cooperation with the University of Bonn. Students and graduates can also benefit from accompanying offers of business start-up advice.
Economic Development is actively involved in networks, such as the Geoinitiative Region Bonn and the Cyber Security Cluster. The Economic Development Office is supporting the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in setting up a new cybersecurity degree program as part of the "Cyber Campus North Rhine-Westphalia" project funded by the state and the possible future location in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. The University of Bonn offers the iStart career program for refugee and international students as part of the DAAD funding program "NRWege Leuchttürme". The Economic Development Office supports this project by providing further contacts and advice. Science marketing and innovation promotion help companies and science institutions to transform knowledge, technology and know-how into marketable products and processes. The Economic Development Office is active in the "Research and Education" working group of the Rhineland metropolitan region and participates in the exchange between universities, associations and the regional authorities.
Reach the public
Through the Bonn Science Night, universities and research institutes in the region get the opportunity to show their research activities to a broad public. This presentation of the use of scientific knowledge is now part of the third mission activities at universities and research institutes. Contemporary science communication offerings are also disseminated through appropriate (social) media. Through its role as a grant provider for the Deutsches Museum Bonn, the Economic Development Office intensively accompanies its further development into a central experience location and forum for artificial intelligence (AI).
