Healthcare management

A strong cluster of the health care industry has established itself in Bonn, which is characterised by an excellent medical care structure, a multitude of health-oriented research and scientific institutions as well as the headquarters of important authorities, foundations and associations of the health care system.

In addition, renowned companies from the fields of telemedicine, imaging systems, consulting and occupational safety are represented at the location.

In 2019, every sixth employee in Bonn was already assigned to the health and social services sector, with the majority working in the core area of the health care system (hospitals, clinics, doctors' practices, etcetera).

High level of medical care

Bonn has a high level of medical care: In the inpatient sector, around 20 hospitals, clinics and specialist outpatient clinics contribute to this, including the University Hospital Bonn with its more than 30 clinics. In the outpatient sector, more than 1,000 registered doctors, psychotherapeutic practices, physiotherapy practices and other therapists are active in patient care.

The supply of the population with drugs and medical products close to their homes is ensured by around 100 pharmacies and companies in the health trade.

Top research

The broad spectrum of medical and pharmaceutical research in Bonn is supported by both universities and non-university institutions. The main focuses are neuromedicine, the medicine of aging, the life sciences and pharmacology.

Authorities and associations of the health care system, important ministries, authorities, foundations and associations of the health care system have their headquarters in Bonn. Their areas of activity are extremely diverse and range from the governmental political tasks of the federal ministries, the charitable work of the foundations to the political and professional representation of specific sectors, professional and patient groups by the associations based in Bonn.

Networking

With its networking activities, the Bonn Economic Development Agency pursues the goal of strengthening the health care industry in Bonn, increasing transparency of the local and regional offers of the health care industry and improving the flow of information between the relevant actors.

In addition to the close cooperation with the Health Department of the City of Bonn, the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis and the Kreis Ahrweiler, the cooperation of the Bonn Economic Development Agency in the Health Region KölnBonn e.V. is particularly noteworthy.

The city of Bonn, together with other local authorities in the region, is a founding member of the association, which was founded in 2009 and now has more than 130 companies, institutions and associations as members.

Securing skilled workers

An urgent challenge in the health care industry is still the increasing demand for skilled workers. Against this background, the Rheinische Klinikmesse was launched in 2011 on the initiative of the economic development and health authorities of the city of Bonn, the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis and the Kreis Ahrweiler. As a contact and personnel exchange, the event is specifically designed to secure the supply of skilled personnel in the clinical sector and was held annually until 2019. The event concept is currently being revised; a new date has not yet been set due to the corona pandemic.

Corona

The health care system is at the forefront in the corona pandemic: it must ensure sufficient treatment capacities for people who are ill, develop containment strategies and work on the development of drugs and vaccines in the scientific and research field. At the same time, regular medical care must not be disregarded. The central interface is the public health service, which is responsible for outbreak management and reporting with contact tracing.

Bonn has so far been very successful in overcoming these challenges. The strong network of local health care players in the inpatient and outpatient sectors has contributed to this. Particularly noteworthy is the close cooperation with the University Hospital Bonn, which has provided advice and support to the municipal authorities at a very early stage with its institutes for virology and for public hygiene and health.
