Knowledge-intensive services strongly pronounced
Research, technology and innovation are important foundations for increasing competitiveness in Bonn as a business location. Innovative products, processes and services are the basis for safeguarding existing jobs and creating new sustainable jobs. Various regional studies, such as "Innovation and Intellectual Capital Report Bonn/Rhine-Sieg" by the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Chamber of Industry and Commerce, "Economic Dynamics in the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Region" by Creditreform Bonn or the earlier studies by the Lower Saxony Institute for Economic Research (NIW) and the Stifterverband der Deutschen Wissenschaft (Donors' Association of German Science) show the special nature of regional potential in knowledge-based services and the IT and health care industry. Knowledge-intensive services are considered to have good growth prospects, as services from areas such as health, information, management or financial consulting will continue to meet with strong demand in the future. In addition, knowledge-oriented services also contribute to increasing competitiveness in other sectors, for example through more efficient innovation processes or better product marketing. According to own calculations, knowledge-oriented services account for 39 percent of all employees in Bonn (federal government: 21.8 percent, NRW: 22.3 percent, according to the NIW/ISI/ZEW definition, as of June 30, 2019).
Economic development measures
Due to the special importance of innovations for the future prospects of the city of Bonn, their promotion is a central component of location development and an important field of activity for Bonn's economic development. The aim is to support companies and scientific institutions through a series of measures to help them transform knowledge, technology and know-how into marketable products and processes. Last year, the Economic Development Agency carried out projects and events at various levels of action to specifically increase the innovative capacity of Bonn's business and science sectors. Various information events and well-established networking activities were carried out, particularly in connection with regional future-oriented industries. After the beginning of the corona pandemic, there was a reorientation towards formats such as online events and webinars.
The focus of Bonn's business development activities is, for example, on the areas of healthcare management and the development of Bonn into a Smart City. A special focus is also on cyber security, information and communication technologies and geoinformation management. Annual trade fair appearances continue to support local companies in presenting their innovations to the specialist public, and suitable marketing measures also round off the procedure for supporting innovation activities.
