Preface Mayor Katja Dörner
Dear Sirs or Madam,
I took over the office of Lord Mayor of Bonn at the beginning of November 2020 and I am looking forward to working with the many stakeholders from business and science. The city of Bonn and the entire region have undergone a structural change in recent years that has led to great potentials of an internationally oriented location. For example, Germany was just able to prevail again in the competition for the settlement of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) with Bonn. It is important to me to further strengthen Bonn in its special function as a second federal political centre, as a location for the United Nations, as a centre for international cooperation and as a centre of excellence for sustainable development and for science, for cyber security, information technology and data services as well as for culture.
A particular challenge at present is, of course, the fight against the Corona pandemic. In order to cushion the negative consequences for the economy, a variety of support measures have been launched by the federal government and the state. The Bonn Economic Development Agency provides extensive information on support packages and supports businesses individually. In many cases, it has been shown that digitalisation can make a very important contribution. For example, many companies have been able to continue their business online or hold important meetings with customers in video conferences.
I am confident that with joint efforts we will get through these difficult times.
Preface Victoria Appelbe, Director of Economic Development
Dear Sirs or Madam,
For the first time, the Annual Economic Report of the City of Bonn has been published exclusively in digital form in German and English. As in previous years, it describes comprehensively the city's economic development and presents the broad spectrum of our activities. Due to the Corona pandemic, the working methods of the Economic Development Office have changed abruptly. Many networking events that had already been organised had to be cancelled. The focus shifted to individual digital or telephone counselling of companies in order to help them get through the current crisis comparatively well.
The Bonn Economic Development Office provided ongoing information on the latest Corona assistance and was available as a contact at all times. Many events, networking formats and training courses were offered as video conferences or webinars from spring onwards. Like all of you, I am sure, I hope that we can gradually return to normality in 2021. The Bonn Economic Office team will continue to be available to support you with any questions you may have. You will find the contact details of the respective contact persons in the report.
